With the addition of Advanced Radar there are now four radar modes available for multiplayer. Simple Radar is the most commonly played type of radar mode, and Team Only & No Radar uses many of the same rules as simple radar in regard to Equipment. Advanced Radar introduces new rules for radar and equipment to multiplayer games.

Radar Ranges Table
Here is a chart of how 'Mechs with various types of equipment along with passive and active sensors will detect each other. On the left is a list of possible radar statuses and equipment that can be found on your mech. Once you find your radar mode and equipment status, the row to the right will list the radar ranges that you will detect other mechs with various modes of radar and equipment status.

*Note: A passive mech with ECM will not be harder to detect than a non-ECM equipped passive mech. Going passive radar effectively turns ECM and BAP off.

Team Only Radar
Team Only Radar
 +
 +
<div id="Team Only Radar">Team Only Radar</div> is a radar mode that allows you to see friendly units on radar the same way you would in Simple Radar. However, enemy units will never appear on radar unless you specifically target them with your "select target under reticule" button. The default button is "Q" and will often be referred to as "Q locking" someone. Once you Q lock someone, your radar will remain locked on your target like it would in simple mode until either the target moves out of range or you select a new target.
 +
 +
In Team Only Radar, ECM is less valuable than it is in Simple Radar and can allow a mech like a missile boat that only mounts BAP to be much more effective than it other wise would since it is harder to detect. ECM will be a bit helpful in that it will prevent people at long range from being able to Q lock you.
 +
 +
*Note: If you suspect that you have been Q locked on by an enemy unit, you can try to break their lock by moving out of their radar range, going passive if your more than 500 meters away (600 if they have BAP), or simple shutting down for a second.
No Radar
No Radar
<div id="Advanced Radar">===Advanced Radar===</div>

<div id="No Radar">No Radar</div>, like Team Only Radar, prevents you from being able to detect enemy units on radar. However, in No Radar games, you cannot detect friendly units on radar easily either. Q locking will still work on enemy units like in Team Only Radar, but can also be used to lock onto a friendly unit. This can be useful in keeping a group of friendly units together without requiring the following mechs to constantly keep visual contact with the friendly lead unit.

Advanced Radar
<div id="Advanced Radar">Advanced Radar</div> is the newest radar mode available and adds a new level of complexity to how radar and equipments interacts with a units surroundings.
 +

 +
All of the radar ranges found in the Radar Range Table above are still correct, provided there is a clear line of sight between the two units. Objects in the environment like Terrain, Buildings, and other 'Mechs can block radar and effectively break radar contact.
 +

 +
Environmental Factors
 +

 +
:Terrain - When Terrain breaks the line of sight between two units, it will always break the radar contact between them.
 +

 +
:Buildings and 'Mechs - 'Mechs not equipped with BAP will have their radar contacts broken when a building or mech breaks their line of sight. Mechs with BAP will be able to detect enemy units not equipped with ECM through buildings and 'Mechs that they would otherwise be able to detect within their radar range. This can make BAP very useful in cities. A 'Mech with ECM and active radar cannot be detected on radar through buildings and other 'Mechs even by units equipped with BAP.
 +

 +

 +
Equipment
 +
:BAP - BAP will a 'Mech to detect any unit within its normal radar range, provided there is not terrain block its line of sight between it and its target. Additionally, a 'Mech equipped with BAP will be able to detect other mechs not equipped with ECM through buildings and other 'Mechs.
 +

 +
:ECM - ECM
 +

 +
:Narc Beacon - A mech that has a Narc Beacon attached to it will show up on any enemy radar they are in range of, even if there is no line of sight between the two units due to terrain or objects. This can make Narcs very useful in an Advanced Radar game.
 +

 +
Additional Tools
 +

 +
:Target Tracking - Turning target tracking on will allow you regain your radar lock onto an enemy mech as soon as the come within your line of sight again. This is useful if you're hunting a specific target and don't want your radar to lock onto a new target once you loose your primary target. Turning target tracking off will make your radar lock onto the first available target once you loose the lock on your current target.
 +

 +
:Toggle Radar Span - When you have your toggle your radar span to "wide", your radar will detect any enemy unit within your radar range provided they are not being blocked by terrain or object. Toggling your radar mode to "narrow" will essentially keep your radar active in a cone in front of you, while your radar to your sides and rear are effectively turned off. This can allow a 'Mech not equipped with ECM to maintain a minimal radar profile while still being able to detect and lock onto targets in front of them. However, you will not detect any enemy units to your sides or rear no matter what their proximity is.
